Station Hotel

Station Rd, Birstwith, Harrogate HG3 3AG, UK – 01423 770254

We went to this place to celebrate my mother in-law's birthday. It is in a lovely country side with picturesque views. We had a booking for 07.45 pm and we were directed to our table straight away. We were asked for our drinks and shortly after our drinks arrived our order was taken. My husband even got his second drink served. But that was more or less the whole activity for the next hour. When our order was served it was quarter to 09.00pm. My mother in-law's dessert was wrong (ice cream instead of the cream that she asked), although our coffees were good. When paying, my husband was asked if everything was OK apart from the late service with no apologies. My hake was a bit bland and the stakes my husband and his mum had were not the best cut of the animal. Although the starters look adventurous, the main courses are just ordinary pub food with not much imagination. They offer gluten free and vegetarian food but no salads neither in the starters nor as a main course. I am afraid we won't repeat our custom.

Very nice food in a very cosy environment. What more do you want? I’d also like to add that a young gentleman with black hair was a very nice waiter. He catered to my every need. I’d come back in a heartbeat 5*

Sophies coffee shop, Bistro and Bed & Breakfast

1 High St, Hampsthwaite, Harrogate HG3, UK – 01423 779219

I've visited the cafe a few times when cycling in the area. The coffee is great and there is a good cake selection. I would definitely recommend the flapjack if you need to refuel. Plenty of space round the back for bikes too.

Food was very good but not cheap. I had lemon chicken salad and my husband had lemon chicken jacket potato. Apart from mine having bread and his potato the meals were identical but his was £2 cheaper! The cakes looked amazing and would live to return and sample. Excellent coffee.

The New Inn

B6165, Burnt Yates, Harrogate HG3 3EG, UK – 01423 771070

We needed a hotel as close as possible to Ripley Castle so the location was perfect. The room was lovely; very spacious and clean. The best part of the visit to this hotel though was the hospitality by the amazing owners. They are a lovely, friendly couple who are very helpful and also made for great company in the evening at the bar. We would definitely stay here again and recommend to others!

Plenty of off road parking. Made to feel very welcome. The room was excellent with very good shower. The evening meal and breakfast were both superb. Loved the evenings entertainment of the pub quiz and music. Tim and Pauline were the perfect hosts. If we find ourselves back in Yorkshire, we'd definitely stay again.

The Old Spring Well

Otley Rd, Harrogate HG3 2AP, UK – 01423 567035

Every where I go to eat I always ask myself is there anything I would have changed?? Always starting with 5 starts then deducting when appropriate.. Today we received exactly what we wanted and had no complaints.. £6 a steak?! No grumbles from me!

Car park, small outdoor play facility for the kids, plenty of indoor tables. Table attendants and good spread of food. Atmosphere is good. Not particularly cheap though so treat days only. These kind of family pubs are really great for eating out with kids and we've been to this one a few times, in part as it's on one of our day trip routes and on an accessible main road.

Travel Super Market search and compare prices for hotels all over the world. Could also be useful for you. I This said I was told by a hotelier that the way to get cheap rooms is to ring up the week before and ask for the weekend rate. You can usually get an absolute bargain as they will trying to book all the rooms that they have not sold! Could be worth a try!

If you would like something truly different you might like to have a look at Airbnb. These are mostly B and Bs provided by people on a very informal basis. The may have a spare room, a yurt, a cottage or a barge with space they can receive guests for a night or a month! The website is highly professional. You can really see what you are going to get. Very well worth a look. Airbnb also show 'conventional' B&Bs as well. Enjoy!
